"Adequate, sustainable urban mobility solutions hold a lot of potential in our efforts to address growing sources of inequality and achieve the EU climate change targets. We aim to halve the use of ‘conventionally fuelled’ cars in urban transport by 2030, and to eliminate their use by 2050. We also want to make carbon-free movement of goods a reality in major urban areas by 2050.
In order for this to happen, policymakers must promote mobility improvements that are efficient, sustainable and less dependent on the use of private, conventionally fuelled cars. Furthermore, the way the EU finances urban mobility projects cannot be focused solely on infrastructure. It must also encompass IT services and an increased focus on inter-regional projects. Funding application processes can often be tricky and burdensome, and there is room to make them more accessible and manageable by local authorities.
Urban mobility is not just about transport systems and emissions, people are the driving force of the economy. Transport workers and those in related sectors in cities are often overlooked. Their vital role in ensuring the quality and safety of public transport must be born in mind to ensure the sustainability of these essential services."@en1
