"I voted in favour of this report because I believe that we need to look at ways to reduce conventional car use in order to bring down our carbon emissions and air pollution. This report promotes public transport which is the only way that we can effectively encourage people to move away from car use. In Ireland, only 8% of the population uses public transport at least once a day; this makes us one of the lowest users of public transport in the EU, second only to Cyprus. A recent survey showed that 50% of respondents cited cost as the main reason for their reluctance to use public transport. Given that the Irish public transport system is the least subsidised public transport system in the whole EU, is it any wonder that fares are so high as to be a barrier to use. It beggars belief that the United States subsidises its private transport system more than Ireland subsidises its public transport. Sustainable urban mobility will never be achieved if we refuse to invest in public transport."@en1
