"Parliament rightly endorsed the European Ombudsman’s call for a stronger complaints mechanism allowing refugees to raise complaints on foot of breaches of fundamental rights.
Closer cooperation between Frontex and the Ombudsman would be invaluable to address concerns that fundamental rights violations are not being effectively followed up.
Furthermore, there is a great need for special protection of unaccompanied minors, women who are victims of gender-based persecution, LGBTI persons and other vulnerable groups. In order to do so, measures such as gender-based training on gender-based violence and vulnerability of migrant women is necessary.
In order for the complaints mechanism to be effective, it is vital that information is available to the complainants and that this information can be distributed in the official EU languages and in languages that the complainants can understand.
Lastly, a significant step towards improving Frontex’s transparency, accountability and effectiveness will come from allowing the thorough investigation of individual complaints, the use of funds by Frontex to be made public and details regularly reported to Parliament."@en1
