"Mr President, there are many reasons why public transport is important. One of them is that 64% of job seekers do not have access to a car or cannot drive. So there, in a nutshell, is your link between public transport and the economy. And yet public expenditure on the economy in the West Midlands is GBP 256 per head, whereas in London it is GBP 2 604 per head. Now I do not think that is very fair, and I do not think my constituents think it is very fair either.
We do get some support from the European Union for this public expenditure in the West Midlands, but very little, partly because the Conservative Government of the UK is ideologically opposed to match-funding that funding. So now that we are going to have regional government at last in the United Kingdom, I appeal to the European Union: fund us directly, don’t let the UK Government take our money."@en1
