"Today’s debate, in the light of the deep controversy which both TTIP and CETA have provoked in public opinion in many of our countries, enables Socialist and Democrat MEPs to reiterate that it is far better to pursue a multilateral trade deal in the world in which developing countries can be treated as equal partners, in preference to Europe being forced to pursue bilateral trade deals in which there will always be an imbalance of power and influence over poorer countries. Ten years after the launch of the Doha Round, for the first time a WTO ministerial conference will take place in an African country. We should take this symbolic opportunity to revive the WTO, and within it recommit ourselves to central principles of fair trade and sustainable development. The WTO will only function properly if it works for all of us, and European Union representatives must ensure that developing countries are at the heart of all and any reforms to trade regulation. For all who criticise TTIP, this is surely Europe’s best response?"@en1
