"Madam President, the recent news that secular bloggers, publishers and journalists are once again the targets of violence in Bangladesh is extremely worrying. The attacks against, and indeed murders of, people exercising their freedom of expression there have escalated over the past year, and five secular thinkers have been killed in 2015. Such intimidation and the threats of continued violence are quickly eroding freedom of expression in Bangladesh – a freedom enshrined in that country’s constitution. Many writers have fled, are in hiding or have been silenced by such threats. This is unacceptable. The Government of Bangladesh must not be seen to be granting impunity to those responsible for attacks on secularism. In a climate of increasing fear and denigration of the freedom of expression, the government must move away from defending laws that prohibit criticism of itself and instead must protect free, independent and secular thought."@en1
