"In my own East of England constituency, the Health and Safety Executive reports that there were 11 workplace deaths in the last year, more than 8 000 workers suffered injury and no less than 125 100 people estimated to have been made ill through their work. It is surely right to seek to do everything possible to seek to avoid each and every one of these? Today’s report will save lives, prevent injuries and improve occupational health – through emphasising proper training, tackling disease caused by asbestos and other carcinogens and by implementing screening measures. It also provides an opportunity to give European Parliament backing to the British TUC’s ʽdying to workʼ campaign, which I helped receive in Brussels alongside fellow Labour MEPs. Offering employment protection to those suffering from a terminal illness would give every person affected the choice of how to spend their final months and the peace of mind to know their job was protected and the future financial security of their family guaranteed. Let us stop people from dying but, where they do whilst still in the world of work, let us give them dignity in their final months."@en1
