"We spend most of our waking time at work, and yet far too many working environments and conditions are damaging to people’s physical and mental health. That is why we are calling on the Commission to present concrete legislative proposals regarding better health and safety at work. Equal opportunities for labour rights and public health care should be accessible to all. Women and vulnerable groups and citizens in rural areas are in particular need of improved coverage and working conditions, as health and safety indicators demonstrate.
The financial and economic crisis should not be used as an excuse to undermine occupational risk prevention policies as this approach is neither acceptable nor effective. Nor should the alleged administrative simplifications , contained in the REFIT programme lead to lower health and safety standards for workers. All workers, regardless of the size of their employer, the Member State of employment or the type of employment contract under which they are hired, have a right to the highest level of protection regarding health and safety in the workplace. The implementation, compliance and enforcement of health and safety provisions must be improved, new and emerging risks tackled and the fight against work-related diseases stepped up."@en1
