"I voted for this report because health and safety is not only crucial for employees but is also beneficial to the productivity of business. The economic crisis cannot be an excuse for cutting corners on safety in the workplace and this report reiterates that point. I particularly welcome the fact that this report highlights the health and safety risks of precarious employment. This type of work, which is becoming increasingly common, undermines existing occupational health and safety structures and can exclude workers from training and access to occupational health and safety services. Precarious work is also associated with mental stress due to job insecurity. This report calls on the Commission to eliminate this type of work. The reiteration of the need for labour inspections to ensure compliance with health and safety and to help to deter undeclared work is also to be welcomed. Austerity policies in many EU countries have led to a reduction in the number of labour inspectors, which is to the detriment of worker’s rights, including their right to a safe and healthy working environment."@en1
