"Last month, I visited mosques in Luton, Harlow and Cambridge and asked some of my own Muslim constituents what they wanted the strategy we are agreeing today to say? They said Europe must recognise – as we do – how mainstream Muslims abhor violence, condemn terrorist attacks and believe these contradict their great religion not uphold it. They back plans for rehabilitated foreign fighters to be able to speak in schools to present the reality of what terrorism really is. They applaud us saying terrorism is an issue of crime not of religion. I talked to one mother who lost her child as a foreign fighter and shared her grief. If she cannot truly be held to be responsible for the actions of her son, how can any of us in politics justifiably seek to blame the whole Muslim community for the warped actions of the terrible few who choose the path of violence? Deal with grievance amongst young Muslims I was told: from unemployment locally to international grievances over Palestine. But above all, treat Muslims as partners in our anti-radicalisation strategy not its object, as we treat Muslims as full and equal citizens in European society."@en1
