"I supported the objection of granting an authorisation for uses of bis (2-ethykhexhyl) phthalate (DEHP) under the REACH Regulation. DEHP is a highly toxic substance placed on the hazardous substance of very high concern list by the REACH Regulation because of its reproductive toxicity that can lead to male infertility even after very short exposures to the substance. Substances defined as hazardous substances of very high concern may not be placed on the market unless authorised for a specific use that has been granted by the EC (European Commission) through an implementing act. The application for the use of DEHP as a plasticiser in the production of recycled PVC plastic that was approved by the EC shows significant deficiencies in evidence of safe use and bases the authorisation on assumed socio-economic benefits. Furthermore, according to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), the application failed to give the necessary safety data or any adequate controls of health risks to workers, therefore although the key issue at stake here is the health risks to the workers exposed, my objection also refers to the larger concerns about the toxicity of DEHP for the general public."@en1
