"I voted in favour of this resolution because Article 1 of REACH states that the aim of the regulation is to ensure a high level of protection of human health and the environment, and that only substances that do not adversely affect human health and the environment are put on the market. The proposal of the Commission to authorise through an implementing act DEHP in PVC plastic in spite of grave concerns regarding the impact of this chemical on human health is deeply worrying. DEHP has been shown in animal studies to damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive organs of males. This chemical is a phthalate which is a member of the family of ‘gender-bending’ chemicals. By authorising this chemical the Commission would be putting cheap plastic goods ahead of the risks to male infertility and misformed sex organs in prenatal and neo natal males."@en1
