"Mr President, I have to say I am reassured by some of the practical measures being expedited by the Council, and this House must not get in their way. Perhaps we can see that human rights – and I use that term loosely, in its expanded sense – has become a rather distorted trump card.
We need to re-evaluate the operation of international human rights conventions and charters in the light of today’s circumstances rather than those of 70 years ago. The system is out of balance and, even in my own country, the United Kingdom, some of the most effective operational security methods have been systematically under attack.
As in every crisis, we have again heard the cry for ‘more Europe’ from the usual suspects. Rest assured: there is excellent liaison between the security services of Britain and France and Germany and many other European countries. We do not need an EU security service but rather greater resources, and more professionalism in those countries where it is lacking.
I do not have time to talk about the bizarre invocation of Article 42(7) of the Treaty on European Union, but that is another indication of where people are using this crisis to take forward an entirely different agenda."@en1
