"Mr President, I started work for British Steel Stainless Stockholders in 1990. During a 20-year career in the steel trade I saw a fairly spectacular contraction in demand. We are at the point now where we have got top-quality, high—tech clean manufacturing in Europe and the UK that is being driven out by excessive regulation, excessive energy costs and by totally uncompetitive dumping from China. The UK steel industry is 42% smaller than in 1990. There were 60 000 job losses in Europe between 2007 and 2012. The European Steel Association recently wrote that they were looking for policymakers to act. Many of the policymakers have never been near a steel plant and got their hands dirty, so I will give them a couple of ideas. First of all, combat the dumping by China. Secondly, look at the electricity prices, which will be up 47% by 2020, and immediately rethink the persecution of our manufacturing in the name of green dreams. European manufacturing is the cleanest in the world. Manufacturing matters. It is vital that European policymakers realise this and get on with setting our manufacturers free, so that we can once again lead the world in manufacturing."@en1
