"Madam President, over 5 000 EU citizens are currently thought to be foreign fighters and radicalised; these are our own citizens. Often they are third- or fourth-generation Europeans, often educated and often with loving families. Understanding why this is the path they have chosen is one of the greatest challenges we face today, and it requires a comprehensive response. Law enforcement, civil society and governments need to work with communities and their leaders, with schools and with prisons. We need to work with internet providers to reduce the dangerous hate-filled and exploitative propaganda on the internet today. We need to better implement existing laws and to reduce loopholes. But I am afraid that today, more and more people are being exploited by criminals. But solutions are never found by pointing the finger of blame at each other, or indeed by the demonisation of entire communities, religions or groups of people. I would like to support the remarks made by my honourable friend Dr Karim a few minutes ago regarding the appalling way in which the media in the UK and elsewhere has reported such dangerous falsehoods – particularly only days after Paris – which undermine all of what we are working towards for the security of our citizens. Solutions are found through cooperation, through actions and a willingness to acknowledge that these most difficult challenges are both complex and nuanced. They can only be solved by reason, by good sense, by calmness but firmness, and by working together to resolve them."@en1
