"I voted against this report because it calls for a single, permanent European Union seat on the United Nations Security Council. Two Member States of the European Union, France and the United Kingdom, already have permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council and I do not believe either country should be forced to give up its seat to the European Union. The Security Council is entirely composed of sovereign nation states and there is no precedent or purpose in a supranational body taking up a seat on the council. For myself personally, and the British Government, it is of fundamental importance that the United Kingdom, a founder member of the United Nations, retains its permanent seat on the Security Council. With its strong commitment to upholding international law, the United Kingdom has led moves for reform to make the UN more effective and efficient in delivering peace and security. The UN desperately needs reform and undermining the national sovereignty of key UN members will only hinder significant positive progress."@en1
