"Mr President, the role of the EU within the UN allows us to act in a forum that is designed to tackle global challenges. The Lisbon Treaty recognised the EU as one such partner when it was established. In times of international crisis and in the face of global challenges, it also allows the EU to participate, particularly through its High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security.
As we are speaking in times of global challenges, I think we should remind ourselves of what the UN was established for: to maintain international peace and security, to promote the peaceful settlement of disputes, to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, and to promote economic and social development. The EU, in conjunction with the UN, has a key role to play in addressing these challenges. Ireland joined the United Nations in 1955 – 60 years ago – and its membership of the UN allows it to progress its foreign policy objectives.
I supported the report. I am happy to do so and happy to continue to participate in discussions as we evaluate the EU’s role in the UN."@en1
