"I am proud that I and my fellow Labour MEPs supported the amendment in this report in favour of ‘anti-Gypsyism’. My own East of England constituency has the highest number of authorised traveller pitches of any UK region – nearly one-in-four of the UK total. Even so, Britain’s Equalities and Human Rights Commission said our region was joint highest for the number of new pitches needed. Moreover, the brutal and avoidable destruction of the Dale Farm site by the Conservative Council in Basildon in my constituency remains a scar on Britain’s reputation, being rightly condemned by the United Nations Special Rapporteur. Discrimination must be fought in all its forms and that against the Roma continues to be an endemic problem in Britain and Europe-wide. The only way to stop unauthorised encampments is to provide sufficient authorised sites. The only way to achieve that is to confront anti-Traveller prejudice, and thus overcome local opposition which prevents local sites from being established. Our proposal in this report represents a real effort to do this, making a commitment to combating discrimination against travellers a condition for receiving this important European funding. We are right to do this."@en1
