"Mr President, as the only British Parliamentarian from a Romany background, I am proud to reaffirm my own Gypsy heritage. I support Roma gypsy traveller rights. Indeed, I will be a keynote speaker later this week at the traveller movement conference in London, when I will be championing this worthy cause.
Much of this initiative report calls for EU action in this area, and in view of my own political position, I cannot support such action at EU level. Instead, to tackle this issue properly, the mind-set must be challenged at national level, and that is something that I will continue to do.
Accordingly, I abstained on this report. However, I voted in favor of Amendment 42 and Recital Q. Both pointed towards racism facing the Roma communities. I was sorry to note that British Conservatives largely voted against this report, but I am hardly surprised – not least bearing in mind that the British Conservative Government’s recent changes to planning regulations which, quite frankly, are prejudicial towards my own country’s travelling community. This, quite frankly, is unacceptable."@en1
