"British Conservatives voted against this report. While agreeing that ending inequalities and child poverty is essential, we do not agree that a top—down EU blueprint is the most appropriate solution. Conservatives do not support binding EU targets, nor do we support calls for the EU to interfere in areas where there is no EU competence, including the provision of social welfare, housing and the financing of public services. Conservatives firmly believe in the principle of subsidiarity but agree that there is a role for the EU to provide a platform for Member States to exchange best practice. We recognise the potential value of the EU as a means to focus attention on the need for action, and for brokering exchanges of advice and assistance for those Member States that need it. Member States should be encouraged to work towards the goal of ending child poverty by, for example, taking policy measures that will support families; improve living standards and prevent children in poverty from becoming adults in poverty by raising their education attainment. How the Member States achieve such goals should be left up to the Member States."@en1
