"Once again I am forced to speak regretting that Conservative and UKIP MEPs from my region have ignored social need in our constituency, but to say that I am proud Labour has voted for European action for social justice – here specifically to combat child poverty.
More than 30% of children in Great Yarmouth, Luton, Norwich and Peterborough are trapped in poverty, according to the Centre for Research in Social Policy.
Why do the other parties vote against setting the aim of guaranteeing those children better healthcare, education, childcare, decent housing and adequate nutrition – and setting up a small European Union fund to pump prime local actions needed to support this?
This is also a report which promotes employment laws that guarantee a statutory minimum wage and collective agreements, which provide greater security for families and fight precarious employment.
That is about combating poverty at its roots.
The truth is that the Conservatives and UKIP put their ideological hatred of Europe before the love we should all feel for our children.
Britain’s ʽSave the Childrenʼ asked us to vote for this report. I did. Labour did. It is for others to explain why they refused to do so."@en1
