"Mr President, I was happy to support this report and I thank the rapporteur for bringing it to the floor today, because child poverty and the fact that we are told that one in four children in Europe lives below the poverty line is unacceptable. We have this knowledge and we need to act on it in terms of investing in education, in particular. Education is key and reduces poverty, and it is not good enough just to provide education facilities for children; we also need to involve families, parents and guardians in that mission to ensure that they fully buy into the fact that an education is a ticket for the children to relieve them from poverty.
There is also much more we can do in the area of health care, housing and nutrition programmes, and for all of us here in this Parliament who know we are an ageing society: we are growing old. We will need these children in the future, and so there is not only a moral obligation to invest in these children right now, but it also makes sense from an economic and a societal point of view."@en1
