"Mr President, it is disappointing that the Commission’s energy strategy is weak in its proposals for a move to a low—carbon economy. We must shift the balance of energy needs to renewables and underline the absolute need for ambitious targets for efficiency. Last week’s State of the Energy Union Report by the Commissioner unfortunately seems to equate energy security with a ramping—up of gas and nuclear. Simply diversifying and changing gas suppliers ignores options which are safer politically and better for the climate. The Commission seems to favour a network of pipelines transporting gas, including via that bastion of human rights, Erdoǧan’s Turkey. The Commissioner speaks of putting energy first, but has already hamstrung ambitious targets and has gone against the principle of mutual respect between the institutions since this Parliament backed a 40% target in October. Perhaps I should not be surprised at the feebleness of the plan for energy and the climate, given that four out of every five meetings of the Climate and Energy Commissioners were with lobbyists for private energy and fossil fuel companies."@en1
