"Madam President, I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the results of last weekend’s election in Myanmar/Burma. As the news continues to come through, it is now certain that the NLD, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, will sweep the board. I had the pleasure of meeting this amazing lady a couple of years ago when I visited Myanmar as part of this Parliament’s ASEAN delegation. It remains one of the highlights of my political career to have been welcomed by her into her now famous elegant home with its lush tropical gardens. Indications are that the military dictatorship is going quietly, conceding defeat. Let us hope that this continues to be the case. We so often hear stories of violence and oppression in this Chamber; it is interesting to hear that this transition may happen without violence. Given Burma’s recent history, this is remarkable. There are clearly many challenges ahead, including the continuing presence of the military in the parliament and the dreadful plight of ethnic and religious minorities such as the Rohingya, but I would like to take this moment to congratulate Aung San Suu Kyi."@en1
