"Last month’s vote was a significant step forward, enshrining the principle of net neutrality for the first time into law in all EU countries including the UK. The blocking and throttling of online content, apps and services will now be banned across the EU. However, important loopholes still remain, most importantly the possibility for zero rating, in which telecoms companies allow customers to access certain websites and services for free without using up their data allowance. There is a real risk that mobile operators could use zero rating as a way to incentivise the use of their own services, while lowering overall data allowances. These uncompetitive practices would be bad for consumers, bad for start-ups and bad for competitiveness and innovation in the digital economy. It is now up to national regulators to uphold an open, competitive internet which allows entrepreneurs and start-ups to thrive and compete on a level playing field. If operators are using zero-rating practices to limit competition and favour their own services, immediate enforcement action must be taken. I, along with other MEPs, will be carefully monitoring developments and fighting to ensure the principles of net neutrality we voted for are properly upheld."@en1
