"Mr President, the future Aviation Package is a perfect opportunity to revisit the arrangements for the Safety Agency for Aircraft, commonly known as EASA. The aerospace manufacturing sector is vital for both our industrial base in the EU and also for innovation, particularly in areas like composites. In my region, for example, Airbus employs 4 000 people directly and thousands of others in the supply chain, but there is a backlog of planes: 6 000 waiting to get certification as a consequence of the delays in EASA. The industry desperately needs the rules covering the agency to be revisited. We need this to stay competitive in a global industry and, best of all as a Budget Committee member, this need not be at any more cost to the EU budgets. So please take this opportunity to make sure that we can make the agency work for the industry and to maintain the security and the high levels of safety that the industry has a record of as well."@en1
