"Unemployment in the East of England rose by 9 000 in the last quarterly figures which were published, showing not just the fragility of economic recovery but the continuing challenge to find ways to help those suffering long-term unemployment in particular. Recently I was privileged to help out at a European-funded project to help jobless run by Community Action Hertsmere in Hertfordshire. I have been honoured to join similar EU-funded schemes around my constituency run by the Prince’s Trust and the YMCA. They do a brilliant job in helping raise confidence for people whose long-term unemployment means low self-esteem is one of the biggest barriers to finding work. My real sadness is that whilst I am working for European projects to provide this help, the Government of my country is more interested in benefit sanctions to drive unemployment statistics down and to leave people still unemployed but also penniless. We have to do better."@en1
