"I voted today in favour of improved air quality standards across the EU. The new directive on national emissions reduction commitments will reduce harmful emissions and lessen the health and environmental impact on our population. It is estimated that around 400 000 people a year die prematurely across the EU from air pollution.
This is a crucial issue and action must be taken, based on robust scientific evidence, to improve life expectancy and reduce associated costs to society. Billions of pounds per year are being lost, and the public is now acutely aware of the issue. Policymakers have been concentrating on climate change to the detriment of air quality for the past decade, and it is clear there is a need for more cohesive and streamlined policymaking, with binding targets for 2025, improved reporting, and provisions on driving emissions and on access to funding to help people adapt to the new measures. I see today’s vote as an important step on the path to better air quality."@en1
