"I, alongside my fellow Labour MEPs, voted in favour of three S&D amendments to this report but abstained on the motion as a whole. Whilst the report is not so bad as to warrant voting against, the Ulster Unionist rapporteur failed to ensure that the final text of the draft regulation includes sufficiently strong provisions for protection of public health and consumer interest. As a Labour MEP I do not agree with playing down the importance of the precautionary principle, especially with regards to the application of new technologies used in food production. Furthermore, the draft regulation opens the door for food derived from cloned animals or their offspring, despite strong opposition from the Parliament in the September plenary. Finally, the current wording allows the Commission to update the list of novel foods by means of implementing acts which excludes Parliament’s scrutiny."@en1
