"Since the 2008 financial crisis, Member State Governments have been forced to impose austerity budgets in order to balance their books and mend their economies. The UK has been foremost among those, and the Government has had to make some very difficult decisions in the past several years. I am pleased to note that the UK is now benefiting from those measures – it remains the fastest growing G7 economy – but austerity packages have been painful for those having to readjust, including many of my own constituents in London.
The Council recognises this context and understands that it is unacceptable for Member States to cut their budgets at home, only to increase the budget of the EU. Sadly, the motion before the plenary today suggests, however, that a majority in the European Parliament has yet to comprehend this. Calling for increases of EUR 4.1 billion and committing to a further EUR 4.3 billion in payment appropriations is unacceptable, and for this reason I voted against the motion."@en1
