"The Commission’s statement on access to finance for SMEs was sorely lacking in fairness, vision and ambition. There was no real attempt to assist Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) in any meaningful way. Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) are the life blood of the Irish economy. SMEs are one of the main employers and are at the heart of communities across Europe. Therefore, what is required are policies that will enable SMEs to grow, create local employment and as a result circulate money into our economy. Europe can not only provide practical financial assistance to companies, but it can also enable Member States to capitalise on the positive aspects which membership of the European Union brings. It is quite clear that Europe does provide opportunities to open up lucrative export markets for our SME sector. Huge opportunities exist in Europe to support our SME sector. However, these businesses need support, encouragement and investment to allow them to continue to grow. This will only happen with the necessary commitment, ambition and political will. Unfortunately, none of these qualities were present in the Commission’s Statement."@en1
