"Mr President, I say to the Commission: thanks; you are getting a lot of abuse this morning, but you have done justice to this debate by having it. It is important that we hear all these voices on the issue of GMO. It is wrong to say that European citizens are against GM technology. In the medical sector they welcome it with open arms. In the food sector there is scepticism, but not 99% of people are sceptical, despite the tone of this debate and the realities that have been spelled out. The European livestock sector uses GM protein for their livestock feed. One country grows GM. I welcome the debate because it allows the facts to elevate above some of the emotion. Some of the comments here I would utterly disagree with, because I approve and accept the authorisation procedures that are in place. I am also aware that young scientists, including young Irish scientists, are leaving the European Union because there is not a welcoming environment for research in this area. I would like to compliment the former Chair of the Agriculture Commission, Paolo De Castro, and support his comments. We need a sound debate on this, not a politicised one."@en1
