"As the former EU Chief Observer for elections in Sierra Leone, it was with deep sadness that I saw the people of that country which has suffered so much endure yet more suffering through the explosion of the Ebola crisis. Already there was not a single operating theatre in the country if any of the election observers for whom I was responsible, needed urgent hospital treatment. For the people of Sierra Leone themselves, their country was simply unprepared for the crisis that Ebola created. Therefore, I very much welcome today’s resolution on the long-term lessons to be learned from the crisis and to make recommendations to strengthen health systems across African developing countries. I call on the European Commission to help Sierra Leone and the other two countries most affected to develop their own health systems in order for them to be able to meet basic healthcare needs and to build up the infrastructure required to ensure that all their citizens have access to healthcare. If the debate which followed the Ebola crisis promotes this objective, perhaps something good can have come from something which was so terrible for all affected."@en1
