"It is outrageous that unscrupulous dealers have been able to find loopholes in EU trade rules to allow the export of goods used in torture or for the death penalty. This has allowed European brokers to sell the equipment, the open promotion of previously prohibited equipment such as body-worn shock devices, the marketing of security equipment to police - such as electro-shock stun guns, shock batons and shock shields, and the Introduction of new technologies and devices on to the market even if these items could be used in the death penalty, torture or other ill-treatment. I am proud to have supported Amnesty International’s ‘Grasping the Nettle’ report and ‘Stop Torture’ campaign to strengthen the EU’s controls and today to have voted to support proposals which will now combat the European Union’s complicity in what is a violation of human rights. I am proud that our Human Rights Sub-Committee has played a key role in bringing this forward and I urge the Commission and Council to come to quick agreement with Parliament to enact today’s vote."@en1
