"Madam President, the EU is not just a marketplace. It should, and does, defend international human rights standards. We reject the use of torture and the death penalty. Indeed, the vast majority of MEPs voted for its abolition last month in this Chamber. The way we trade with the rest of the world must reflect these fundamental values. The changes proposed by the Commission and amended by MEPs today and in the Trade Committee in which I sit will improve existing EU legislation. This text will ensure that no EU company can profit from torture by oppressive regimes, and that no EU company trading in execution or torture equipment can access the EU market. I supported the report tabled and I support EU action in this field, because I support a European Union which puts its principles into action."@en1
