"Madam President, what do Australia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, the USA, Israel, Switzerland, Macau, New Zealand and Sri Lanka have in common? I can call back to the UK from any of those countries free of charge from my mobile phone already. In fact, there are more non-EU than EU countries on the list of countries where I can do that. It is based on consumer demand; it is based on the free market; it responds to the needs of consumers. I can do the same from Italy, France and Spain, within the European Union. Why? Because they are countries where the consumer demand exists. But I cannot do that from Brussels. I cannot do that from Belgium, because frankly the needs of the MEPs are not quite enough to sway that with consumer demand just yet. By legislating on this, what we end up doing is we force companies to do something where there is not the demand, which is uncompetitive. When you force companies to do something which is uncompetitive, you put prices up for everybody. That is not right, it is not fair for the average person on the street, and yet Labour still use that as example of why they think the EU is a good thing."@en1
