"Mr President, I wish to highlight the detention of Gregg Fryett, a British citizen who has been held in Cambodian custody since March 2013 in relation to allegations of a commercial fraud nature. Mr Fryett maintains his innocence and, I understand, at all times before his arrest had made himself available to the investigating authorities. Indeed, when arrested, he had voluntarily returned to Cambodia at the specific request of the judge, who had given him both written and verbal assurances as to his free passage. Whilst the specific issues are, of course, a matter for the Cambodian authorities, the fact that Mr Fryett has now spent 31 months in jail – well in excess of the statutory period for a person who can be held in Cambodia before being brought to trial – raises major concerns for those who champion justice and also questions Cambodia’s reputation by highlighting the systemic problems in the country’s justice system at a time when economic assistance is being afforded to it by both the United Kingdom and the European Union."@en1
