"Mr President, I would like to thank the Commissioner for what he has said and Mr Goerens for the report, and I would, of course, particularly like to put on record my thanks to all the health workers and people who worked in those countries in very difficult conditions. The Commissioner was right in saying that the biggest lesson we learned was that where countries did not have a basic health service, they could not cope and they quickly became overwhelmed by the disease. So my question really is: what is going to happen now to build those health systems? You said, Commissioner, what should happen, but what is happening? Has anything changed in the EU programming for the future? What is going to happen in our joint programmes with these West African countries? We built new clinics, what is happening to them? What is happening to the health workers who work there? What happened to the pledges made in Brussels in April at the big conference? I am asking this because last week I met a healthcare worker from Sierra Leone and he said that some of the health facilities are being dismantled, that there are not enough doctors to staff them. But in Sierra Leone, one of the poorest countries on the planet, only lactating mothers, children under five and pregnant women get free healthcare. There is no free healthcare for the Ebola sufferers who suffer from long—term after—effects of Ebola. So we need to have a new programme for health and I am not clear whether the Commission and its Member States have got one and how they continue to coordinate because as you said, we all pledged in New York to have universal health coverage but it is not enough to keep pledging it, we have to actually do it. So, we can do something in these countries, and I really want to know what it is the Commission is going to do."@en1
