Parliamentary immunity is provided for under the Rules of Procedure and, naturally, requests for waiver should be treated with sympathy where appropriate: being an elected MEP should not provide a ‘get out of jail free’ card. The request for waiver in this case appears to relate to the possibility of investigations. I feel, however, that I am unable to make a decision, not least because I am uncertain as to whether or not any of the investigation relates to matters of security and defence. I do not have sufficient information. Whilst supporting the rule of law, I want to be certain that actions for which waiver of immunity is sought are truly criminal in their nature."@en1
