"Along with my colleagues in the Socialist & Democrats Group, I voted in favour of this resolution as progress on closing gender gaps in employment and occupation has been slow. Today, women still account for 32% of part-time work, the gender pay gap is 16% and the pensions gap is 39%.We need to do more to narrow this and bring about true equality for all EU citizens.
In the UK, on average, women earn just 81p an hour for every pound a man earns. Forty-five years after the Equal Pay Act, this is completely unacceptable. We need to turn gender equality in law into gender equality in practice. Based on the current rate of progress, the gender pay gap will not be closed until 2084. Along with my Labour colleagues, I have long supported rules to require companies to publish their gender pay gaps. However, transparency alone is not enough: this data must be used to make equal pay a reality across Europe."@en1
