"The UK has, in terms of legislation, the Equality Act and the Sex Discrimination Act, both of which prohibit direct discrimination on grounds of sex and of gender reassignment. Excessive EU interference in this area is unnecessary and it suggests that Member States are unable adequately to protect people against discrimination. The UK Conservative delegation fully supports the principle of equal pay between men and women and we do not accept any form of discrimination in or outside of the workplace. We believe, however, that the specifics of employment law are nationally sensitive and therefore should be determined in individual Member States, and not at EU level. There are a number of elements of the Záborská report which we are unable to support: for example, Commission-imposed sanctions for companies who do not consider gender equality in their public procurement process; binding quotas for women in the political and economic sectors; EU harmonisation of employment terms; a further call for an EU maternity leave proposal; and a strengthened role for trade unions in establishing employment contracts. The UK delegation supported a significant number of paragraphs that reaffirm the principle of non-discrimination and equality, but we rejected this report as a whole."@en1
