"Madam President, Turkey is a candidate country, as others have said, and, in consequence, Turkey has received an incredible EUR 3.8 billion in pre-accession funding in the past five years, and it is scheduled to receive another EUR 3.2 billion in the next five years. However, in the context of immigration to Member States, as a previous speaker pointed out, Turkey does not qualify as a safe country – it is not safe. But if Turkey is not a safe country, it follows that it cannot, should not and must not be a candidate country. Free movement, under Article 45, from Turkey – not a safe country – has to be a complete non-starter. We should not be paying Turkey all this money. And, to answer Mr Brok’s ludicrous point, we can cooperate fully with Turkey without admitting Turkey to the European Union. The fact is that Turkey is an Asian country and can never be an EU Member State."@en1
