"Mr President, I fully support what the rapporteur has said. I think it is so clear that we could wonder why it did not happen until now. Certainly, geographical indications for agricultural products have been very important. I saw in my own constituency in Waterford a food product called a ‘blaa’. It is a bread roll made in a unique way. By getting geographical indication it has increased its marketing opportunities and become far more widely known. Now everybody who goes to Waterford wants, number one, to have a Waterford blaa. The same could apply to non-agricultural products. To take Waterford again as an example, there is the world-famous Waterford crystal. Its trophies are used in some of the big sports competitions in the world. It went through hard times recently, but I think that if it got geographical indication that would be a huge boost to it. So this is a tool, as the rapporteur has said, which we should utilise to grow our local industries."@en1
