"I voted against this proposal, which relocates 120 000 people from Greece, Hungary and Italy to other EU Member States, as I believe that it only serves to encourage further mass movement into the EU, thus possibly causing a further humanitarian crisis in both the Mediterranean and across the Sahara desert.
The definition of ‘international protection’ was not stipulated as in the 1951 Geneva Convention, but rather as an EU definition based on a separate directive. This will force Member States to take an allocation of people – or if they try to opt out, they will be obliged to pay 0.002% of their GDP to the EU. Furthermore, EU taxpayers will pay EUR 6 000 per person to the allocated country and EUR 500 per person to Greece, Italy and Hungary.
As the EU enjoys freedom of movement, without border checks within the Schengen area, there is nothing to stop refugees from illegally travelling to many other EU Member States.
The estimated budget cost is EUR 780 000. Thankfully, the UK enjoys a separate opt-out under Protocol 21. However, the UK will still be affected due to people trying to enter, thus exacerbating this humanitarian crisis further."@en1
