"Mr President, the institutions of government in the north of Ireland are experiencing a crisis. This crisis has been brought about by unacceptable reductions to the budget allocated by the British Government. The crisis has been exacerbated by cynical political opportunism on the part of Unionist political parties. The only way through this is all-party talks and extensive discussions. The British Government has not taken an even-handed, nor an impartial, approach and, as for the Irish Government, it has detached itself almost entirely.
Recently this Parliament endorsed a resolution supporting the Irish peace and political processes – processes which are now under attack. We in Sinn Féin are calling on the President of Parliament, Martin Schulz, to apply positive pressure on the co—guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement – the British and Irish Governments – to press for inclusive, all-party talks to commence without precondition and without delay.
In the past, outside help has assisted us in breaking deadlocks. Assistance this time should come from Parliament in order to protect and defend the Irish peace and political processes, which act as a beacon light to other areas that are emerging from conflict."@en1
