"Madam President, if I may I will focus upon the COP discussions, where I think we have much to embrace and some challenges to meet.
Listening yesterday to Christiana Figueres, the UN negotiator, it was perfectly evident that her ambition of making the 2°C target is not going to be realised; 3°C was her best ambition. The reality is that that failure will be felt most keenly by those who can least afford to address the problems themselves.
I had the pleasure, before the summer recess, of hosting here at Parliament two ambassadors, one from the Maldives and one from Vanuatu, and they were talking about the challenges that they face. For them, when people talk about 1°C, 2°C or 3°C, they are not thinking about it in terms of degrees; they are thinking about it in terms of feet and inches of water taking over their land, or indeed thinking of the Beaufort scale and the winds that sweep across some of those islands.
Those are the challenges which we must be able to recognise. If we are not able to do so, the challenge will be very clear: migration will be a global problem and we will have to meet its challenges."@en1
