As in Ukraine, as in Russia, there is – if I may borrow 19th century terminology – an internal dispute between Slavophiles and Westernisers and the Westernisers are not in the ascendancy. Belarus is a sovereign country and, sadly, it has made a decision to go in the direction of autocracy and central control, rather than of freedom and personal autonomy, but once again we should accept the limits of our ability to influence things. Beyond holding up a better model there is not really very much we can do."@en1
