"I voted in favour of this positive report, which focuses on the critical role of the education system in the EU in reaching the goal of gender equality. This is an important issue not only in Ireland but right across the EU, and beyond. The report highlights the role of education in empowering girls to reach economic independence in the future. It calls for a concerted effort to be made against negative gender stereotypes in schools, the media and advertising; for increasing the presence of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and for Member States to provide targeted support for disadvantaged families. It also calls for the Member States to consider making age-appropriate education on sex and healthy relationships compulsory in school curricula. The report points out that formal and informal education programmes must address gender-based violence, gender discrimination, harassment, homophobia and transphobia, in all their forms, including forms of cyber-bullying or online harassment."@en1
