"Mr President, in representing Northern Ireland as an MEP, I recognise that we as a region lie on the periphery of Europe as a continent.
That in itself presents inherent challenges for residents of our province in travelling to other EU countries for a range of purposes, whether it be for business or on holiday. I therefore welcome any debate on how transport links can be created that better connect local citizens and businesses with the rest of Europe.
However I am not convinced that this report properly brings together outstanding priorities in these areas. The focus on coercing Member States to enforced national road charges for vehicles is unwelcome, as are calls for legislation governing professional driver training to be reopened for review and consolidation.
On many occasions in this chamber I have fought the corner of hard-pressed hauliers in my constituency and I will not support provision that stands to make their lives harder and place added pressures on testing authorities here."@en1
