"While recognising the importance of the gender dimension in job creation, I strongly oppose the idea of job creation being either an EU or government activity. Job creation comes from governments supporting business development, innovation and industry development and supporting SMEs; not from direct governmental interference. I do not therefore condone any increase in interference from the EU in areas such as childcare. In my view, the EU should focus on job creation as an objective; working to foster a more supportive and therefore more beneficial, environment to assist with the achievement of this goal. Indeed, despite notable progress in recent decades, women still face significant challenges in the labour market and if one considers the impending skills shortages, particularly in the UK, such challenges have the potential to negatively impact society more broadly. It is important that gender issues are treated seriously in the area of cohesion policy, because this represents a very significant slice of EU expenditure. Women are essential to the success of any regional policy. It is for these reasons that, on this occasion, I abstained from voting."@en1
